STORM HITS BROADNECK PENINSULA
Wednesday, June 4, 2008
-
After watching the storm roll in from the West, units from 23 had a busy afternoon and evening. A straight line micro-burst hit the communities of Severn Heights and Belleview Estates. This burst brought down trees and wires in a straight path from the Severn River running west. Due to the extent of damage, both communities were essentially cut off from access by vehicle. Having parked as close as possible, 23 ventured into the area on foot to check for injuries and assess the damage. Traveling door to door, the crews made sure neighbors were accounted for. At the same time, hazards were noted. Besides the obvious power lines down, many trees had become loose enough that they had broken their root balls, but had not yet fallen down. Unified command with AA County Fire, AA County Police, AA County Roads, BGE, and other support agencies was established. Coordination among the units was necessary to keep additional civilians out of the area until crews could clear the roads. Power was expected to be out for 48 hours.
