The Anne Arundel County Fire Department is a combination department, with 30 fire stations, that border the southside of Baltimore City in central Maryland. Station 23 is Anne Arundel Counties Special Operations Station and provides the county with hazmat response, confined space rescue, high-angle rope rescue, collapse & trench rescue, swift water rescue, and dive rescue. The station operates a Quint, Rescue Squad, Dive Unit, and Collapse Unit. The station and the Maryland State Police Aviation Division provide the county and the eastern shore of Maryland with a helicopter rescue team.

While being placed available from a rescue box assignment in the 300 block of Ritchie Hwy. that the QNT was running on, E231 was advised by Fire Alarm to set up the landing sight at Station 12 (Earleigh Heights) for MSP.  The helicopter was being requested to transport a patient from entrapment involved in a motor vehicle collision.  MSP Trooper 1 was on the ground at 07:17 hours and  transported one patient to Shock Trauma in Baltimore.  E231 cleared at 07:25 hours.

@ 05:59 hrs.:  RBX 23-01:

A full rescue assignment was dispatched for a 2 vehicle motor vehicle collision with entrapment on Ritchie Hwy. and McKinsey Rd., Severna Park.  E231 & QNT23 arrived on location and had 2 patients with one confirmed entrapment - Deputy Chief 1 arrived & took command of the incident.  The crew from QNT23 worked on patient extrication, which was accomplished at 06:25 hours.  MU30 (Armiger) transported one patient to A.A.M.C and PM12 (Earliegh Heights) transported another patient to Shock Trauma in Baltimore.  The scene was turned over to AAPD and units from 23 cleared the scene at 06:52 hours.

Vehicle into a Structure

@ 11:53 hrs.  -  RBX 04-15:

E231 and CU23 were dispatched for a vehicle that struck the CVS building in the 7800 block of Telegraph Rd., Severn.  QNT4 (Severn) arrived on location to find a vehicle that had struck the building, but what appeared to be minimal damage with no injuries.  All responding units, with the exception of units from Station 23, were placed available.  Upon location, the building inspector was requested at which it was determined the structure was safe.  The scene was turned over to AAPD and units from 23 cleared the scene at 13:10 hours.

While the QNT was on-location with a working rescue assignment, a Maryland State Police helicopter was requested for transporting the victim that was trapped in the vehicle that the QNT crew was working on.  E231 was dispatched to the Severna Park High School to handle the landing zone.  Trooper 6 transported the victim to Shock Trauma in Baltimore.  E231 was in-service at 13:51 hours.

MVC with Entrapment

@ 12:48 hrs. - RBX 12-09:

QNT23 was responded for the MVC with entrapment.  E122 (Earliegh Heights) arrived to advised 2 vehicles involved w/one person trapped.  Upon arrival, the crew from the QNT went to work on removing the victim from the entrapment - the patient was extricated in 23 minutes.  MSP helicopter was requested for the victim while 2 other persons that were injured were transported to BWMC with non-life threatening injuries.  QNT23 was back in-service at 13:41 hours.

Haz-Mat Scare at B.W.I. Airport

Box 43-01 @ 12:35 hrs.:

Station 23 was alerted to assist B.W.I. with a possible Haz-Mat incident - lower concourse at the luggage terminal.  SQ and SU23 responded.  Upon arrival, BWI fire department personnel stated that they had an unknown liquid substance, orange in color, leaking from a piece of luggage that had originated in Nigeria.  The lower concourse of the airport was evacuated and local traffic was diverted.  A crew from 23 made entry and obtained a sample of the product, as well as air monitoring levels were checked for any potential threats.

With assistance from M.D.E., the results of the sample were a medicine that originated from Nigeria and was released as a result from a broken container in the piece of luggage.  Numerious agencies were on location and at the conclusion, U.S. Customs and MdTA Police took the scene over and questioned the owner of the baggage in question.  Units from 23 cleared the scene at 14:49 hours.

Assist with Recovery

Box 55-19 @ 08:43 hrs.:

SU23 was dispatched to assist DU & MU8 (Bay Ridge) on a body recovery in Queen Anne's County.  The drowning occured the night before & QAFD requested the dive team from AAFD on locating the victim.  The incident took place on Greenwood Creek, off of Greenwood Creek Road in Grasonville.  After entry was made by the divers, recovery of the body was made at 10:27 hours.  The incident was turned over to M.N.R.P. and SU23 was in-service at 10:50 hours.

Collapse Call

LBX 21-01 @ 08:58 hrs.:

With a lot of rain that was in the area, Station 23 was alerted to a basement wall collapse in the 6900 block of Ridge Road, Harmons / Dorsey.  CU & SQ23 arrived to find in fact an exterior basement wall of a dwelling that had collapsed.  There was no gas service to the dwelling, and the home was occupied but all the occupants were able to get out of the dwelling safely.  Crews from 23 investigated for any further possiblity of collapse and the county building inspector was requested.  CU & SQ23 were back in-service at 10:49 hours.

Box 19-13 @ 16:48 hrs.:

QNT & SQ23 were dispatched for a dwelling fire in the 500 block of Foxpaw Trail.  E194 (Cape St. Claire) arrived on location of a townhouse - end unit with heavy smoke conditions coming from the dwelling.  Status was changed to a working fire with fire on the 2nd floor.  Fire was contained to the one dwelling and extinguished.  Unfortunately, 2 dogs did perish in the fire.  The cause of the fire is still under investigation.  Units from Station 23 cleared the scene at 20:33 hours.

Motor Vehicle Collision

@ 16:43 hrs  -  MBX 23-09:

SQ23 was dispatched for a MVC in the 900 block of Ritchie Hwy. N., Severna Park - M.S.P. on location.  The SQ arrived to find a 2 car collision with the vehicles blocking 2 of the 3 lanes on Ritchie Hwy..  After further investigation, the occupant from one of the vehicles involved had no injuries, and the other vehicles occupant refused medical treatment.  The medical units that were dispatched were placed available prior to arrival.  The vehicles were checked for any further hazards - none found.  The scene was turned over to AAPD.  SQ23 back in-service @ 16:57 hours.
